EU school program "Fruit and vegetables"

Since the 2010/2011 school year, the city of Jena has been participating in the EU school program "Fruit and Vegetables Program Component". The number of participating schools has risen from eight to 17.

The aim of the EU school program is to increase the consumption and acceptance of fruit and vegetables among children by offering them regularly in primary, community and special schools. The aim is to make healthy eating appealing to children with a free extra portion of fruit and vegetables. Accompanying educational measures, such as farm visits or themed project days, are also intended to promote knowledge about the products and their origin as well as the children's skills in handling the products.

For the 2019/2020 school year, the Jena school administration has once again issued a public tender and found a new supplier in Gönnataler Putenspezialitäten GmbH, Buffet:ok department, from Altengönna, which will supply the primary school classes of the participating schools with fruit and vegetables twice a week - initially for the period from 3 September 2019 to 29 February 2020.
