Education and participation (BuT)
Anyone who receives basic benefits for their child, such as social assistance, citizen's allowance, benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act, housing benefit or child supplement, can also receive certain benefits from the education and participation package:
- communal lunchtime meals in daycare centers and schools
- Excursions and trips
- personal school supplies
- Participation in social and cultural life
- appropriate learning support
- school transport
- Education & participation package for recipients of citizen's allowance
- Education & participation package for recipients of housing benefit & social assistance
School enrollment examination
The Health Department carries out the school enrolment examination for all children starting school whose main place of residence is in Jena. This examination is carried out by doctors from the Pediatric and Adolescent Medical Service and serves to assess your child's physical, emotional and mental development. As a result of the examination, the child and youth medical service will formulate recommendations that are important for the child's successful school attendance and discuss them with the parents.
All-day care
After-school care (primary level)
In the city of Jena, every child in elementary school and grades 1-4 of the Thuringian Community School has the opportunity to attend after-school care. The after-school care center is part of the school and is the responsibility of the school management. Educational and leisure activities take place in the after-school care center. After-school care is also available during the vacations and on school-free days. The application for after-school care is made when registering for school. The after-school care fees are calculated by the Citizen Services Department. The fees depend on the parents' income and other factors.
All-day schools (secondary level)
All-day schools are schools that offer at least seven hours a day, including lunch, on at least three days a week. This usually combines lessons and free time. In contrast to half-day schools, the daily routine is different with longer breaks and work groups, which means that some lessons also take place in the afternoon. A wide range of study groups such as sports, music, art or technical workshops are offered by the school and by cooperation partners. All Jena schools offer pupils a warm lunch. Open all-day school
The use of all-day care is voluntary and is done by registering for a school year or school semester.
Partial all-day school
At least some of the pupils are obliged to attend afternoon lessons. Former open all-day schools have often taken on the status of partially bound all-day schools and are currently in an organizational transition phase with the aim of becoming fully bound all-day schools.
Tied all-day school
Afternoon lessons are compulsory for all pupils.
Inclusion
In the city of Jena, school education is based on the idea of inclusion, understood as the right to full participation in society for each individual with their specific requirements.
The aim is to ensure optimal learning conditions for every single pupil, regardless of their individual circumstances. Both the inclusive school concepts of the individual schools and the support center make important contributions to this.
Apply for school transport services
School transport is the necessary transportation of pupils on their way to school. In the city of Jena, it is possible to apply for school transport services (in accordance with §4 ThürSchFG) or additional voluntary services for special challenges (in accordance with city council resolutions). As a rule, school transport services are provided with a chip card for public transport in Jena.
School catering
Lunch break provision
In the city of Jena, all state general education schools offer a warm lunch service. The quality standards of the German Nutrition Society (DGE) for catering in schools provide scientifically proven, practical and balanced guidance.
EU school program - school fruit and vegetables component
In the city of Jena, a total of 3,783 pupils from 18 primary and community schools are taking part in the 2024/2025 school year. The purpose of the funding is to promote the consumption of fruit and vegetables by schoolchildren in order to sustainably increase the proportion of these products in children's diets during the phase in which their eating habits are formed.
EU school program - school milk component
The aim is to sustainably increase the consumption and acceptance of milk among children by offering it regularly in Thuringian educational institutions. The aim is to make healthy eating appealing to children with a free extra portion of milk. In addition, children are to be made aware of healthy eating and sustainable food as part of accompanying educational measures.
School fair
Jena's school landscape is constantly changing. The city of Jena therefore organizes a school fair every two years, in the odd-numbered calendar year. The next fair will take place on 18.01.2025 in the Volkshaus Jena. At the fair, visitors can find out about the different types of schools and the various concepts of Jena's schools and talk to teachers and school administrators.
Register school place
School enrolment
All children starting school with their main residence in Jena will receive the required school registration form by post approximately four weeks before school registration (in May of the previous year).
Transition to class 4/5
All fourth graders in Jena receive a school registration form by post approximately four weeks before the school registration week at the secondary schools (in March of the respective transfer year).
Relocation of a school-age child
School registration must be made at the state school nearest to the child's home, according to the type of school desired.
Guest school relationships
Pupils from the surrounding area need the form "Gastschulantrag ABS" (guest school application ABS) to register at a Jena elementary school / a Jena support center. Pupils from the surrounding area need the "Expression of interest" form to register at a Jena community school / comprehensive school / a Jena grammar school. The form must be handed in at the school.
Student grants
Under the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG), individual training assistance can be granted. This applies if trainees do not have any other means of support for their living expenses and education.
