"Westschule" Public Elementary School, Jena
The Westschule is located near the city center in a renovated historic building. Currently, nearly 400 children attend school here in 18 age-homogeneous classes. They are supported by 23 teachers, a special education teacher, and 16 after-school care staff members.
Classes begin at 7:45 a.m. and end at 12:40 p.m. or 1:30 p.m. Each school week begins with a morning circle. This is followed by study periods and subject-specific instruction.
Starting in 3rd grade, students receive grades. In the afternoon, the children can play at the after-school care center, participate in a variety of recreational activities, and complete their homework. The Westschule emphasizes the arts. Each year, an “Art Night” alternates with a Christmas or spring concert.
